California's Great America: 2 "New" Haunts & Website

Photo from ThemeParkReview.com

CGA has released their Haunt website, which can be found here, and on top of that, they have announced 2 "new" Haunts for this year. The first is a twist on their original Slaughterhouse maze. The new Haunt's name? Slaughterhouse: Annihilation. We're not too sure about how much will exactly change in this maze, so if you have any hints or clues as to what this retheme is, comment down below or send us a message!

The other "new" Scare Zone includes Dead Man's Cove: Forsaken Souls. Again, we don't know what's going to change, so we're just going to kind of sit back & watch what happens this year at CGA's Haunt, and how all this "new" stuff pans out.

General Updates From Across the Chain

Photo from Creepyla.com

It looks like Canada's Wonderland is receiving a Terror of London Haunt for the 2011 season, and it looks to be replacing Slaughterhouse. With that said, it looks like the London themed Haunts are spreading like wildfire this year, also given the new London Terror Haunt at Worlds of Fun, which is replacing Dominion of Doom.

Dorney Park has announced their new Scare Zones for this years Haunt, which include Age of Darkness, Cut Throat Island, and Grave Walkers. These scare zones are replacing the Gauntlet, Pirates Passage, and Headstone Hallow.

On a website note, Halloweekends at Cedar Point has a preview website up, which can be viewed by clicking here, and Valleyscare in Minnesota has released their Haunt website, Valleyscare.com. Other websites up include Worlds of Fun, and Dorney Park.

Canada's Wonderland: Terror of London for 2011

Photo from ThemeParkReview.com

It looks like Canada's Wonderland has officially released their new maze for the 2011 season! With the addition of Terror of London, their maze lineup may be affected, but we aren't exactly sure how, yet. The CW Haunt website still has yet to be released, so we'll have to hold off on official announcements until then!

2011 Overall Update

http://themeparkvillage.com/images/stories/hauntlogo.jpg

The past few weeks I have been on vacation, and have failed to keep the site updated, so we're going to do an all around update on everything going on in the Cedar Fair Haunt industry!

One little bit I noticed right off the bat was that at Valleyfair in Minnesota, a new Haunt was announced at their recent Coaster Craze event. The new Haunt, Camp Wekilou, will actually extend outside of the park boundaries, and go into Picnic Cove, their enormous picnic area, making this Valleyscare's biggest haunted attraction yet.

Heading south, at Coasting For Kids, a charity event to raise money for the Give Kids the World Village in Florida, Worlds of Fun announced that they are receiving a new London Terror Haunt. However, despite the announcement, we're unsure whether it is a zone replacement (which in that case, it would replace Dominion of Doom), or a new Haunt. Stay tuned!

Dorney Park hasn't released much info regarding any new Haunts, however, after a little bit of digging, we found that on Newsplusnotes, there was a leak regarding a possible new Haunt location. No theme or rumors have been released, so we'll have to keep our ears and eyes peeled to see what's going on in Pennsylvania.

Canada's Wonderland is one of the few parks where we haven't heard anything regarding any new Haunts this year. The other park that we haven't heard much about is California's Great America. If anyone has any leads on what might be coming to CW or CGA, feel free to leave us a comment!

A unique rumor/news bit that we found out about a while ago regarded a new Haunt at Scarowinds. What makes the rumor unique? Well, nobody knows what the new Haunt is, and apparently, it's staying that way until the Haunt's Opening Night. Rumor has it, it might be some sort of lab theme, but that's all we've heard, and that's not a very strong rumor to begin with. We'll have to watch out for what Carowinds has up their sleeve!

Cedar Point has released information for their popular BooBuzz event, which includes a tour of their new Haunted Trail. Yep, you read that right, a new Haunted Trail? What does Halloweekends have in common with Scarowinds? Neither park has released what their new Haunt is yet. We are eagerly awaiting the release of the Haunt websites for all CF parks. This should be an interesting & creative Haunt season!

Kings Island has yet to release any information regarding any new Haunts for this year, however, they have posted a pretty funny Youtube video regarding the information about their Job Scare.

As if that wasn't cool enough, there is talk of a Toy or Doll Factory being added to Kings Island, as well as some major improvements/modifications to Wolf Pack. However, the Doll/Toy Factory rumor was around last year too, so who knows what could happen. They also announced on their Twitter that 2 new mazes will be added to this year's event.

Kings Dominion in Virginia has been awfully quiet, although they did confirm that their Haunt will include one more maze and one more zone that the previous year's event.

New Haunts a plenty all over the Cedar Fair chain! We'll have to keep our eyes & ears open for any other news and rumors about. Again, feel free to comment with any tips, leads, etc.

Happy Haunting!

Knott's: New Haunts Announced for 2011

Knott's Berry Farm has released their full lineup of Haunted Attractions for the 2011 season. As noted on the LA Times Website, there will be 3 new Haunted Houses, and 1 entirely new Scare Zone. Here's a bit of info about each new maze.

> Invasion Beneath – The military battles against creatures emerging from a fissure in the Earth's core. Replaces the perfectly themed Black Widow's Cavern (Calico Mine Ride).

> Endgames: Warriors of the Apocalypse – A post-apocalyptic arena where gladiators battle to the death for the entertainment of the rich and powerful. Replaces the pointless and endless Labyrinth (In Camp Snoopy at the former Peanuts Playhouse location).

> Delirium – A wasteland along the blurry line between nightmare and insanity. Replaces the mediocre Club Blood vampire maze (Ghostrider warehouse).

Invasion Beneath, as noted, will replace Black Widow's Cavern in the Calico Mineride, Endgames will go in a new location in Camp Snoopy, replacing Labrynith, and Delirium will replace Club Blood after its stay in the Ghostrider Warehouse.

The new Scare Zone for the 2011 season will be a branch off of Ghost Town in a formerly vacant section of the park during Haunt.

> Gypsy Camp – Werewolves stalk a gypsy encampment seeking revenge for an ancient curse. (Along the Ghost Town backstreets near the Lockdown and Delirium mazes)

Sounds like this should be another great year for Knott's and their Halloween Haunt!

One thing I should mention is that in Endgames, the maze replacing Labrynith, Knott's will do something very few parks have tried. Using televisions, they will show other guests walking through the maze using video cameras/monitors in certain rooms.

We aren't sure how it will work out, or if the effect will prove to be useful or even innovative, but we sure cannot wait to see that, along with all the rest of the new Haunts at Knott's this fall.

Kings Island: Dinosaur Trail Opens Up New Possibilities

Photo from Flickr.com

A new attraction has been announced for Kings Island's 2011 season; entitled Dinosaurs Alive, this walkthrough, upcharge trail will be an interactive adventure that will feature over 60 life sized animatronic dinosaurs spread out over 12.5 acres of woods. Unfortunately, you read it right - this attraction IS an upcharge attraction, costing guests $5 to enter.

One thing that is extremely beneficial for Kings Island with this addition is the amount of woods it opens up. Trail of Terror, a creepy forest adventure, was located in the same area last year that Dinosaurs Alive will occupy this year. What does that mean for Kings Island's Haunt? Change most likely!

With Trail of Terror being one of the older Haunts in the KI Haunt lineup, we can assume that with Dinosaurs Alive occupying TOT's land, that the Trail of Terror will be modified, or replaced. With what? We don't have a clue, but given that DA is 12.5 acres of trails, we can only hope there will be some kind of new mega attraction, possibly even jurassic thmed! Change is great, and change over 12.5 acres of woods is even better.

Cedar Point: Soak City Haunt?

Photo from Experiencethepoint.com

Not that it has any truth to it, but the latest buzz on Pointbuzz.com is that there are ideas of a Haunted Attraction in Soak City? Could it happen this year? Well, yes, it very well could, but there aren't any concrete rumors even regarding this location. The latest thoughts on this simply are that; thoughts, and nothing more.

Given the sheer size of Soak City at Cedar Point along with the overwhelming budget that Cedar Point has for Halloweekends, we would love to see a mega-Haunt of some sort in the waterpark. Will it happen? Again, probably not, the folks at Pointbuzz are just thinking out loud. Don't we all love to?

Knott's Berry Farm: Haunt Vault

Photo from ThemeParkAdventure.com

Hello CFHauntNews followers! We found out a few days ago that a Knott's fansite entitled Theme Park Adventure has a brand new look into the past of the Haunt at Knott's Berry Farm called the Haunt Vault.

The Haunt Vault will eventually be a vault full of videos and photos of walkthroughs featuring various Haunt mazes at Knott's Halloween Haunt. Featuring mazes right now such as Alien Attack, the Haunt Vault will bring former Haunts back to life for Haunt fans of all ages!

Take a look, it truly is a great start to what I'm sure will be a massive project!

Valleyfair: Picnic Grounds Haunt?

When browsing a Valleyfair fansite (Valleyfair Zone) we found some rumors that pertain to this years Haunt. According to a rumor posted on the site, Valleyfair's Picnic Cove area which is located outside of the park could be used this year for Haunt. After looking at an overview of the grounds, the area itself is fairly large and could house a good sized Haunt!

Along with the Picnic Grounds rumor, there is also a rumored relocation of Valleyscare's only Scare Zone, Blood Creek Cemetery. The relocation would move Blood Creek Cemetery from the Ferris Wheel walkway to the Antique Autos attraction.

This would create an entirely new kind of Haunt for Valleyscare, and would make Blood Creek Cemetery one of a select few parks that have ever had, or will have Antique Autos Haunts. We did a post a while ago about Car Ride Haunts, and if memory serves us right, Blue Ridge Bloodbath at Kings Dominion is the only Car Ride Haunt in the entire Cedar Fair chain, although Kings Island and Geauga Lake did have attractions like Blue Ridge Bloodbath in the past.

Will Blood Creek Cemetery become an Antique Autos/Car Ride Haunt? Will the Picnic Grounds be home to Valleyfair's biggest Haunt yet? Stay tuned for more information!

Worlds of Fun: Terror of London for 2011?

Photo from Flickr.com
Rumor has it, the London of Terror Haunt that was rumored to be added at Worlds of Fun last year is making it back onto the drawing board for this years Haunt. Apparently, a reliable source posted on Facebook that the maze/zone would take the place of Dominion of Doom, Worlds of Fun's scare zone that is on the path that takes guests towards the Mamba area.
We'll have to see if this rumor pans out to be true once the website is launched, but for now we'll have to hope for a replacement with this awesome theme! Stay tuned.

Knott's Berry Farm: New for 2011 - Delirium

The new maze released at West Coast Bash 2011? Delirium. This frightful design by the famous maze designer Dan Miller will take the place of Club Blood in one of the Knott's warehouses. Comprised of a theme that combines dreams and nightmares, Delirium will open up at Knott's Scary Farm for the 2011 season, and is already drawing in heavy hype by the Haunt industry.

We can't wait to see Delirium in all its glory, as well as any other mazes that premier at Knott's this fall! Some other confirmations announced at West Coast Bash:
  • Doll Factory is returning for what should be its last year.
  • Cornstalkers is possibly returning, some confusion with this one.
  • Slaughterhouse is returning.
  • Dia De Los Muertos is returning.
  • Lockdown is returning.
  • Virus Z is returning.
  • A new show featuring old Haunt animatronics is going to premier in the Bird Cage Theater.
Sounds like 2011 will be another outstanding year for Knott's, and we can't wait to hear any/all news about Black Widow's Cavern, Bobo's, Cornstalkers, etc. Stay tuned.

2010 New Haunt Reviews: Scarowinds and Kings Island

Kings Island debuted a new werewolf themed maze entitled WolfPack. This brand new maze was placed in the Son of Beast station, which was fitting seeing as the ride itself lay dormant for the entirety of the 2010 season. From what it sounded like, the maze featured a lot of static werewolves, shirtless characters (Twilight anyone...?), and a lot of burlap covered walls. Here's a review we found from the Examiner.

"There were some impressive ten foot high werewolves standing around, but they are poorly lit and placed to the side where the effect becomes lost on guests meandering through the maze. Besides, a sweaty shirtless guy is likely to jump out in front of you, so the snarling werewolf is probably the least of your worries."

Sounds like it was a hit & miss kind of maze, but regardless, we're sure that Kings Island will work to improve the maze for the 2011 season! We can't wait to see what the park has to offer this year, and most importantly, if those wrestling midgets will be back! Stay tuned.

Defex Inc. premiered at Scarowinds last season, including two stories of pure fright, terror, and toys! Designed with the theme of a toy factory, Defex was an intricate maze filled with loads of detail conveying the feel of an actual factory. Here is a review we found on Carowinds Connection:

"Defex was a great new house even though it kind of lacked on the old toy factory theming. The very beginning had some drunk looking hot chick scharactor that was holding a bottle of whisky on top of a platform. There was a fork lift you had to go in front of and the driver would yell at you to get out of the way or else he would threaten to run you over. There was also a dressed up skeleton in a Santa Clause costume and a lady who looked like she was cut in half laying down on the floor along the route. Towards the end, you have to walk through one of those claustrophic blow up things like you have to in Asylum even though it wasn't as bad in this house as it was in that one."

Sounds like a real winner! We have heard nothing but positive reviews about Defex, and look forward to seeing the maze return for the 2011 season, along with any other mazes Scarowinds cranks out!

2010 New Haunt Reviews: Cedar Point & California's Great America

Photo from PointBuzz.com
Cedar Point premiered a revamped house after their longstanding Undertaker U was removed. The picture above says it all. Dr. D Mented's Asylum for the Criminally Insane. Placed in the old carousel building, the Asylum took the common mental hospital theme and gave it a new twist, even sparking some controversy with the residents of Sandusky (and in other parts of the country).
Back to the Haunt, it seemed that the Asylum was pretty well received, but not anything outstanding. Cedar Point's Halloweekends has been known for putting on fantastic houses in terms of a visual appeal, but not so much in regard to scaring. Here's a review we found on ThemeParkReview.com:
"This is definitely a step up from last year's Undertaker U. I personally
loved this one, it had a great atmosphere, awesome actors, well-done
animatronics, and great scares! Even the queue was fun. The actors loved to roam
around in character and pop out from the doors and windows of the building! The
floorplans pretty much the same as Undertaker, but they really filled in the
spaces well, so it's not just hallway after hallway. Loved the drop-down
portrait, and the guy got me good!"

Sounds like Cedar Point has a pretty good Haunt on their hands! We'll have to see what the #1 Amusement Park in America brings to the table for the 2011 season!

Photo from ThemeParkReview.com

Adopting the Black Widows Cavern idea that Knott's is known for, California's Great America ditched Camp Gonnagetcha after only 2 seasons, going to the newly themed Black Widows Cavern log ride. Located on the actual Log Flume ride (Similar to the Sleepy Hallow concept Knott's executes to perfection), the ride takes guests through caves and narrow paths filled with spiders, ending in a climatic . . . splash. Here's a review we found online:

"We found one ride themed into Black Widow’s Caverns with creatures
pouncing, fog, spiders and disturbing sounds. Take heed though, you will get
wet. Several of the other rides are operating, but not themed."

We didn't capture a clear consensus of whether or not a lot of people enjoyed the ride, but based on the video we saw, it was definitely a step up from Camp Gonnagetcha. We can't wait to see what CGA throws at guests this year with their annual Halloween Haunt!

Up Next: COMING SOON!

2010 New Haunt Reviews: Worlds of Fun and Valleyscare

Cornstalkers premiered last season at Worlds of Fun's Halloween Haunt, joining plenty of other corn themed mazes in the chain. The maze took place of Camp Gonnagetcha which was located on the Fury of the Nile island. The layout of Cornstalkers apparently was a bit different than Camp, but still used a lot of the same direction that Camp did on the island. Here's a review we found on Coaster Community submitted by one forum member:

"One word to describe this haunt, AMAZING! I was afraid I was going to pick out
flaws that didn't match a real farm but I couldn't find any. The detail in
Cornstalkers was great and the scares was pure frightening; it wass almost like
I was on a real farm (gone bad that is). In my opinion this is the new best
haunted house at Haunt."

It sounds like Cornstalkers has successfully replaced Camp Gonnagetcha and pleased the fans of Worlds of Fun, especially during the Haunt season.

Moving north, we head up to the Halloween Haunt at Valleyscare. Nothing new was added for the 2010 Haunt, but there were still many improvements. It sounds like in the vampire maze, Chateau Du Damne, there were some improvements, and the route for Blood Creek Cemetery, the parks only Scare Zone, changed a bit. We couldn't find all that much pertaining to reviews, but here's a little snippit about the Mangler Asylum maze, which seems to be a fan favorite.

The Mangler Asylum was the third stop on the Haunt tour. This maze was the same as usual. Incredible detail, horrifying monsters, same layout, and as always, the horrifying Big Boy who is infamous at Valleyscare for his tendency to tickle rape other employees & diehard Haunt fans. Memorable as always. The Mangler Asylum was the third stop on the Haunt tour. This maze was the same as usual. Sounds like it was a great maze this year! Let's hope we see Valleyfair crank out something intense for next years Haunt! Next up for review: COMING SOON!
